Digital Cinema Trends from Kodak

Digital distribution is a new world. Kodak has built its reputation on quality imaging, and it has transitioned into the digital world by providing digital systems for theatre exhibition. Kodak Digital Cinema provides services through subscription plans that help the producer and theatre owner work on the same digital page.

Content is prepared and delivered in a new way. There are two stages to preping the show. The feature presentation. And the pre-show material.

Once the pre-show creative work is complete and the digital file - containing pre-show material, commercials, alternative content, or feature presentations - is available, it needs to be checked, encoded, packaged, and distributed to the cinema to play as scheduled.

With new pre-show capabilities of fades, animations, and special source conversions, the day of boring trailers could be coming to a close. The theatrical experience is going through a transition as theatrical owners are having to compete with the home theater phenomenon -- so you know that big ideas will be sought, tried, and refined.

Who better to work with this vital link in the movie industry marketing chain than creative producers who want people to see their work on the big screen!

I can imagine doing some "Google" searching on the topic of the movie to match up interests of the movie goers with the subject of the movie -- location, theme, characters, era. Maybe history or travel or books will be the best match of advertisers for a particular movie. Hmmm....

Maybe the movie producer can suggest good tie-in advertisers, just like they consider product placements in the movie itself. This could open a whole new opportunity for producers to cross-link product placements with preshow advertisments for the theatre. Marketing tie-ins like this could make the difference in getting an indie scheduled on the big screen.
