No Shame Theater and Shorts Festival - Cooperative Exhibition

No Shame Theatre of LA will be presents an evening of film shorts during the No Shame Goes To Hollywood Film Festival at The M Bar in Hollywood.

The diverse range of films were written and created by over 40 members of No Shame Theatre, a Theatre group who create spontaneous revue shows on a weekly basis at the Powerhouse Theatre in Santa Monica. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets to the screening are $5. Valet parking is available. For ticket reservations, call The M Bar, Los Angeles at (323) 856-0036.

“The idea for the Film Festival grew out of a conversation I had with Jonathan Price, our musical director,” says JJ Hickey, who is in his third year writing and directing for No Shame. “We wanted to give everyone a chance to push themselves artistically by expressing themselves in another medium.” The motto for No Shame is “Dare to Fail” and the film makers were encouraged to use film to create stories that would be difficult if not impossible to perform live on a stage.

The first No Shame Theatre was created 20 years ago at the University of Iowa by student playwrights Todd Ristau and Stan Ruth. The first performance used as its stage the cargo bed of Ristau’s green pickup truck, defiantly placed in the middle of the parking lot outside the University’s EC Mable Theatre in Iowa City. Since then, branches have sprung up in New York, Miami, Chicago, Portland, St. Louis, Austin, Texas, Charlottesville, VA and other cities.

The Los Angeles chapter of No Shame Theatre was started three years ago by Artistic Director Jeff Goode (The Eight: Reindeer Monologue) and Executive Director, Brian Rochlin. “The structure is, whoever shows up, gets to make the show,” says Goode. “What’s exciting is that you get to see things that people ordinarily wouldn’t dare to do, because there would be a screening process and they’d be afraid of being eliminated. We hope that participants will perceive No Shame as a road to self-discovery rather than just another showcase for being discovered.”
