= The NEW Magazine!

Augmented reality of print is kind of like an aimated GIF on the Web -- buy hey... it's getting there. Print is... well, 1 dimensional, and augmented realtity even bring 3D to the print experience. But hey, it's a first! It lays the groundwork for visionaries who will take it to additional, more elegant applications. These augmented reality examples are worth exploring by content developers in all media -- these diverse examples are harbingers of tech to come!

The SZ Magazine is renowned for international creativity and innovation. This award winning publication covers stories about unusual opinions and perspectives. The entire issue No 33 of the Sueddeutsche Zeitung's supplement magazine (hitting the news stands on August 20th) is dedicated to present its readers with a print media experience never before seen anywhere in print + smart phone form.

In cooperation with Augmented Reality (AR) specialist metaio the entire magazine has been enriched with multimedia content which can be enjoyed by anyone using a smartphone.

This makes the SZ magazine the first publication to enhance print media with the attractions and capabilities the digital world has to offer.

This innovative augmented reality issue of SZ is being delivered to over 550,000 households, and represents a completely new media experience by combining print with augmented reality overlays as can be seen with a smartphone app.

iPhone and Android Smart Phones + App = Augmented Reality

With the help of AR technology by metaio, iPhone and Android users can enjoy additional multimedia content simply by pointing their smartphone camera at certain magazine articles.

Augmented reality elements include:

  • The cover photo shows the featured interviewee hiding behind her raised hands. When viewed through the smartphone's camera, she appears smiling cheerfully at the viewer.
  • A photo "interview without words", when looked at through the smartphone shows little speech bubbles with jibes and comments she couldn't help making during the shooting
  • A fantastic 3D animation by the illustrator Dirk Schmidt.
  • Favourite spots in Munich, Berlin and Hamburg are included in a virtual city guide that augments photos with restaurants, bars, clubs, shops and hotels.
