YouTube Finds a Revenue Model in 2010

YouTube can claim 3 out of 4 web viewers in March 2010, according to Home Media Magazine.

Google Sites topped online video sites with 136 million viewers in March -- that's 3 out of 4 online video viewers, watching an average of 96 videos per viewer, according to ComScore data.

Wow! What a jaugernaut!

Add to that market heart throb the fact that YouTube is expanding its movie streaming service (www.youtube.com/store) that includes both independent and studio releases. And you have a video version of the ITunes store.

Rentals are priced from $1.99 to $3.99 for 48 hours.

YouTube launched the rental streaming service with five independent films at the Sundance Film Festival. Competing with Netflix, iTunes, Blockbuster On Demand and Amazon VOD, Google has an uphill challenge, but they also have a few dedicated fans!

Google has pioneered the free and ad-supported model, and are now turning their attention to rental revenue models.

Key players that support Google's new revenue model include Lionsgate, Image Entertainment, Crackle.com (Sony), Bollywood and Screen Media. Not bad in this crowded market channel.

Google's VOD debut is being looked at as the catalyst needed to really heat up the video-on-demand business model.
