Unit Photography Creates Marketing Gold

Still Photographs are Vital Marketing and Sales Support for Movie Distribution

It takes more than film in the can to make a movie a hit. It takes buzz. Glamour. Promotion. Word of mouth. All those additional elements of a film are created by marketing and marketing runs on images. Unit photography taken on-set is powerful. These still photographs are taken during key scenes of your film, feature principals of acting and creative management, illustrate the heart of the story, and are most economical when planned as part of your production.

Unit Photography (or production photography as it is sometimes called) is worth its weight in silver to a film producer and distributors. Photos are needed to tell your story effectively throughout the life of the project:

  • One sheet posters
  • Post cards
  • Fliers
  • Web site
  • Packaging
  • Newspaper ads
  • Billboards
  • Catalog listings
  • Promotional stories
  • Sales pitches
  • Special event promotion
  • …and more

Photography of key scenes, principal actors, director, and other key team members create e a valuable image library that is used and reused for many applications over the life of a film – and that can be as long as 20 years!

  • Movie Publicists need stills for media contacts
  • Film Distributors need stills for ads, posters and mailers
  • Theatre and Group Exhibitors need stills for newspaper ads, fliers and posters
  • Film buffs and consumers need stills for autographed mementos
  • And Producers need stills to sell their current project…and their next project!

Production stills can be pulled from Quicktime digital video -- but they aren’t high enough quality for print enlargements.

The most effective way of building this valuable photographic record of your film’s key elements is to plan ahead during pre-production. By bringing a unit photographer into the production plan, you can identify the key scenes that need to be photographed, schedule time on-set for key actors and directors to be photographed amidst the glamorous moments of creativity, and save money by not having to recreate costuming, lighting and sets at a later date.

DVD packaging benefits from quality Titling and photos
Distributors require appropriate photographic images in color and black and white, digital and print in order to properly list, advertise and promote your film. Check the contracts of potential distributors early in the game and you will be able to add an enticing element to your valuable film package.

Marketing materials help tell exhibitors and film fans your story, help position the film as intriguing and worth seeing, and make your film stand out in the onslaught of the more than 6,000 films that are released each year.

Innovation Solution Center services for indie producers include
