Reframe from Tribeca Offers Distribution of Quality Indies

Tribeca Film Institute has unveiled Reframe, a curated online outlet with its sights set on filtering some 10,000 films and videos via the Internet.

Tribeca's hope is to develop a viable new revenue stream for a wide swath of independent films and filmmakers.

Reframe is a program of Tribeca Film Institute, and is funded by John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation with additional support from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The 2008 launch of Re:Frame includes a partnership with CreateSpace and Amazon aimed at digitizing and delivering -- on DVD or via Amazon's Unbox service -- films from leading indie, documentary, foreign and experimental filmmakers.

While primarily focused on bringing libraries of titles to the educational marketplace, the REFRAME website is also open to any aficionados of so-called niche or alternative cinema.

DVDs and downloads are available for sale at a variety of price points, with filmmakers receiving substantial percentages from purchases.

Brian Newman is not necessarily looking for new work that is just hitting the film festival circuit, but rather is hoping to lure filmmakers who have a library of content for which they already own the rights.

Reframe is covering the digitizing costs for work available in video format and providing a master to the filmmaker, while work originating on film can be digitized at a discounted cost.

Filmmakers selling of their films via Reframe will keep 50% of the digital downloads revenues, and a tiered structure for DVD sales revenues.

Reframe is meant to be highly curated so that it can offer, quality content. While that's a nebulous term, Reframe is not for user-submitted amateur shorts designed for YouTube, etc.

Reframe's goal is to preserve the digital heritage of quality independent filmmaking.

Become a Reframe Partner

Reframe invites filmmakers, distributors, archives, and other owners of film and video content to become partners.

Non-exclusive: Reframe’s is non-exclusive, allowing partners to continue distributing content directly or through alternative outlets;

Free or low-cost digitization: Digitization from a video source is provided at no cost and a wide variety of formats can be supported. For projects on film, high quality digital telecine is offered at a discounted rate, the cost of which is deferred.
